2013 Heroes for Our Kids Event

The Lifetime Heroes for Kids is awarded to someone who has been dedicated to children and the community through volunteer service, leadership and a lifelong commitment to bettering the lives of children in Miami.

Adam was the Board Chair for Our Kids of Miami-Dade Monroe from 2006 to 2009. Adam’s commitment to Our Kids and the children that we serve is unparalleled. His influence, guidance and leadership over the years has strengthened Our Kids and has encouraged us to always strive to improve and continually focus on the children in our care and the unique needs of our community. Thank you so much for your dedication.

For this award, we asked our agencies to nominate Foster-Adoptive parents that are super heroes for our kids. Parents who believe, know and demonstrate that they “…love, support, and advocate for children separated from their families. Parents who are…respected, skilled partners who strengthen and mentor families.” Collectively our providers voted on one foster or adoptive parent to recognize as the Foster/Adoptive Parent of the year.

This year’s winner, William Presswood is a foster parent for Charlee Homes for Children. Mr. Presswood takes hard to place youth. He takes our teen boys with difficult issues such as run-away teens, aggressive personalities, and substance abuse, among others. He takes the boys on all his vacations, is actively involved in their education, transports them to all medical appointments and plans outings such as the beach, movies, concerts and more.

When his son Edwin was 17, Mr.Presswood sat him down and asked for permission to adopt him. Edwin spoke at last year’s National Adoption Day and said that when he met Mr.Presswood is the day he felt his life began. Mr. Presswood is an inspiration to many and we are lucky to have him as a foster parent.

The community Partnership award recognizes an organization that does exemplary work to support the foster care system and children in the community.

Because of their support through The Miami Heart Gallery, we have been able to raise awareness about children in foster care and recruit foster and adoptive parents. The Heart Gallery is a traveling photographic exhibit created to find forever families for children in foster care. Local photographers photograph youth in foster care and exhibit at locations throughout the area and state. Through this partnership we have seen over 65 adoptions as a direct result of their efforts. We truly appreciate their partnership and are better because of their collaboration and support.
